Protected Wrecks at Fifty

Protected Wrecks at Fifty

The Solent has one of the densest concentrations of protected wrecks, with sixteen examples representing many different time periods and types of vessels; they are protected by three different laws. Artefacts from nine of these sites can be found in the Shipwreck Centre.

The Protected Wreck Exhibition Gallery showcases the stories and artefacts from The Needles (including HMS Pomone), the two Shingles protected wrecks, SS Faith, HMS Acheron, and UB-81. While at other locations in the Shipwreck Centre you can learn about HMS Swordfish, the A-1 Submarine and the SS Mendi

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund it was possible to develop the Protected Wrecks Exhibition, which also features a new video. There is a QR Code Trail within the Museum that provides access to a wealth of additional resources including blogs, reports, audio and video.
