Prehistory

Did you know that the Isle of Wight has only been an Island for around 3000 years? Find out more about changing sea levels and the legacy of submerged prehistoric landscapes and artefacts this has left around the Isle of Wight and Solent area.

Our display of 8000 year old material from Bouldnor Cliff – the UK’s only identified submerged Mesolithic occupation site – is the only place where it is possible to see the stone tools, worked wooden features and range of ecofact material from the site.

You can also discover more about the types of water craft used in prehistory, including two significant boats that are on the UK’s National Small Boat Register.
