The history of the Isle of Wight is a history of human relationships with the sea. Our range of displays demonstrate how ships and shipping have been intrinsic to the development of the Island. Through artefacts, models, paintings and articles we explore themes including lighthouses and navigating local waters.
With large numbers of ships wrecking on the Island’s shores, lifesaving, lifeboats and the RNLI have been vital parts of the maritime infrastructure. We have examples of equipment and stories of bravery that have helped save many sailors.
